Wine Not Whine

Yesterday I mentioned that drinks in the Czech Republic, specially out in the countryside, are not expensive if you live in London and have been in Norway. Where we are is the second least populated part of the country (thanks, Wiki) and beer is the drink of choice.

However, I like a drop of the house white/red. Here is an example from a restaurant wine list and, just so you know, the price is well under £10.

I am certainly not laughing at the English translation. What’s not to like about a wine that enhances the mood for society at large? A friend used to refer to claret as “the red infuriator” and he certainly didn’t enhance the mood of society when he was drunk. Here, if you stop at a bar in a small village and order a glass of white wine you get the same respect as a rugby player asking for a glass of Babycham after a match – does Babycham still exist? The only way to recover some street cred. is to order slivovitz to finish off. I like it better than grappa but maybe not quite so much as fruit distillate, to which it is closely related.

The major attraction here is the castle. It looks to me a lot like Colditz, what do you think?

The river is fishable but, perhaps like the Arran, not necessarily productive.

Walking through the beautiful countryside we have seen buzzards, deer, muntjac and two sheep. The weather is getting autumnal and tomorrow we are moving on.

You will be getting excited about Conference; I believe that a real leftie always drops the definite article and I don’t want to offend Jeremy. Indeed I have a little something specially for him, below.
