Dear Diary

imageI know that you are not interested in my diary but last week was rather testing. On Monday I was bobbing around on a trimaran on the Solent. On Tuesday I consulted my (Investec) broker over a leisurely spot of lunch outdoors in Chelsea. On Wednesday an old colleague took me to lunch in the City. On Thursday there was no new post as I was feeling a bit liverish – super-sorry and all that to the (two) readers who missed me.

Anyway, I got back into gear on Friday and after writing about Leonard Rosoman in the morning, by lunchtime I’d bought this lithograph. The Curwen Gallery in Great Windmill Street is a favourite but I had not realised that Rosoman was an early supporter of the gallery and a director. Jill Hutchings who started the gallery remembers him with great affection. Let’s look at the picture now.

It connects up my week. My cousin, whose trimaran I was on, lives near Stowe. His grandmother was brought up at Stowe. Had she been born a boy she would have become the Duke of Buckingham. These days, I wonder what Garter would say if a woman decided to be trans-sexual in order to claim a title? And the Gothic Temple at Stowe is a Landmark Trust so if you like the look of it you can rent it.

So I’ve got as far as Friday. On Saturday Robert went to Manchester and I am staying with a friend in Suffolk. Her house is at the head of this article. Meanwhile, in the real world, Theresa May is straining every sinew to make the UK a better place. It would be presumptious to dedicate this bit of Sunday morning froth to the PM, so this is for you, Robert.

  1. Purely as a matter of curiosity, how do you know how many readers you have, Christopher?

My website mightn’t have the same capability, though I log in to Statcounter daily and I had 481 visits yesterday.

During the week I get about 600 a day; though when I wrote a bit about the death of the 6th Duke of Westminster, it soared up to 1,500 on one day. Exceptional.
