Troubles

The demolition of the Magistrates’ Court reflects my emotions and perhaps our situation.

Joy in the Morning

I bring tidings of great joy. Until some twenty years ago DR Harris and Co, est. 1790, chemists and perfumers in St James’s Street, served a pick-me-up to be consumed at the shop counter or to be taken away. Now they have brought it back with a new receipt.

Pirates

The Union Theatre was a favourite when I worked in the City. Handy to walk to and they reliably staged impressive, small- scale musicals.

In Pursuit of Rare Meats

I’m sorry, I just cannot approve of an expedition in pursuit of rare meats and I hope few people want to see rare mammals killed. It’s pursuing animals to extinction.

Bills

Don’t think I was ever on “The Bill”, when you have to report to the Head Master for a misdemeanour. Today there are three more Bills – eyes down, get ready to tick them off.

A Picnic in the Park

Occasionally you may have heard tell of sumptuous luncheons enjoyed by me in a variety of European locations. In fact “lunch” comes up  hundreds of times if you do a search. Some were quite expensive.

Eintopf

At this time of year I get out the heavy, orange Le Creuset pan given to me in 1984 and reach for the chopping board, the tin opener and a bottle of red wine.

Playing Footsie

If I had a thousand bucks for every time I have been told or, more usually, read that stock-picking is a mugs’ game and a low cost tracker fund will, in the long run outperform stock picking.

The List

While in many spheres electronic communication is convenient and saves paper, sometimes the old fashioned way works better. I like receiving newspapers and magazines, Wooster Sauce and The List in hard copy.
