Ding Dong!

Ding Dong! The bridge is dead. Which old bridge? The Garden Bridge!
Ding Dong! The Garden Bridge is dead.

The Garden Bridge Trust, the charity established to build and run the proposed Garden Bridge in central London, has announced that it will be winding up the project. The Trust has had no choice but to take this decision because of lack of support for the project going forward from the Mayor. We would like to thank all our donors and supporters who gave us unstinting support and encouragement along the way.

A complete waste of more than £37 million on a pointless project. Now I suggest the mayor takes a look at my modest proposal to create a riparian park along the north side of the Embankment between Westminster and Blackfriars bridges. This two mile green ribbon will link the City and Westminster, encourage walking and provide an oasis of calm for Londoners and tourists to relax in. I made this proposal in September last year (A Bridge Too Far) and now that the garden bridge has been scuppered I hope it will be taken up.

Big Ben can lead the ding-donging before it falls silent on Monday for lengthy maintenance. When it starts chiming in 2021 let’s hope it is to celebrate the opening of the new Thames Embankment Park.

  1. Agreed. Waste of money on a useless folly. Money much better spent on multiple improvements such as Christopher’s Embankment and Camden’s Highline.
