Lucia

I went to Fulham Opera’s Lucia di Lammermoor on Friday night and was bowled over by the singing and, to a lesser extent, the production.

But I would say that wouldn’t I? I am a trustee. Perhaps a better indicator is that the final performance this evening is sold out; SRO, Standing Room Only. My reservations about the production will make me sound a fuddy-daddy. It is modern dress – no problem with that. There is not much set which helps focus on the music – that’s good too. The working Nespresso machine was a nice touch. In fact the only problem was a bathroom scene with WC and basin. It didn’t add anything and for me blurred the narrative. Strangely the Covent Garden Lucia also has a bathroom scene.

Fulham Opera’s next production will be Verdi’s Don Carlo next autumn. Next up for me is Haydn’s The Creation at St John’s Smith Square on Tuesday.
