South of Tunis

It’s that red pin again.. This morning it marks Gozo, one of the twenty-one islands in the Maltese archipelago. Having never been here before and erratic Geography it comes as a surprise to see that I am south of Tunis.

Robert and I flew to Malta yesterday and yesterday’s post about Mabel Strickland and Ralph Cator was triggered by this migration. It is a breath of fresh air to land at a small airport and be in a taxi twenty minutes after touch-down. On the ferry across to Gozo we chatted to a young teacher – he teaches music and plays the organ. He told us this weekend is carnival in the town behind our hotel and he promises it will be a big rowdy party. I will force myself to attend as a duty to you curious readers; a far cry from White’s where I had an excellent dinner on Monday evening as a guest of a reader.

Gozo, February 2017

  1. Delightful destination, especially Gozo. The Maltese love their rabbit stew – one of my abiding memories!

  2. Yes, rabbit stew with a bottle of the lovely Sardinian Cannonau.
Question: are the busses still non EU reg ie wildly painted and primped for trade? Hope so.

I found a rare George V1 bust at Government House and that lead me to a chat with caretaker about Dom Mintoff. According to him Mintoff started out as being wildly Imperial ,wanted to keep Malta as an island Gibraltar, wanted[and got]English wife, wanted[and didn’t get the K at Buck House, chit for Lords]…and then got his revenge…a grocer’s republic,Libyian flirtations, divided islands…Gozo seemingly ultramontane and monarchist until recently. Enjoy the party.

    1. The busses are pure modern, rural England with an electronic fare system like Oyster cards on the tube. I will furnish a picture tomorrow. Interesting about DM.

  3. Slight change of tone. If this is of interest, Alan Price plays monthly at the Bull’s Head in Barnes (usually the second Thursday). A very small place but highly enjoyable – all the old Animals favourites.

    1. It is of interest and I will go. I especially enjoyed Alan Price’s gigs with Georgie Fame. I heard the latter once at Ronnie Scott’s.
